Synopsis

The Bonobos are an endangered species of surprisingly human-like Great Apes who live in the Congo jungle. The Bonobo Beni was captured by ruthless hunters as a youngster and taken far from his family and habitat. Scared, alone and mistreated in captivity, Beni has lost all hope when a woman's hand reaches through the bars of his cage. It is Claudine André, a caring and passionate woman dedicated to the bonobos' cause. Her extraordinary dedication to Beni and other endangered bonobos - among them, Beni's childhood friend Yeki, may be one of the last hopes for the survival of the species. After a long and harrowing struggle, Beni learns how to fend for himself in nature and regains the trust and autonomy that were robbed from him during his captivity.
