Synopsis

Attending a memorial service for her deceased parents, Eleanor Ashby glimpses a shadowy figure which she believes to be her brother Tony, who supposedly committed suicide 7 years earlier. The incident provides Eleanor's other brother, Simon, and her Aunt Harriet with further proof that the highstrung girl is mentally unbalanced and therefore not entitled to her share of the family fortune. Now doubting her own sanity, Eleanor attempts to throw herself off a cliff but is rescued by Tony, who claims that he merely disappeared and that there was no suicide. After convincing the family solicitor of his identity, Tony moves into the Ashby mansion, where he experiences several violent attacks upon his life. While conducting his own investigation, Tony falls in love with Eleanor and, to justify her incestuous feelings, is forced to admit that he is only posing as her brother. Simon is unmasked as a paranoid who murdered the real brother and hid his body in the house's chapel. When Tony's corpse is discovered, Simon, by now hopelessly insane, knocks the imposter unconscious and ties him up in the chapel. Aunt Harriet sets fire to it in an effort to destroy all evidence of Simon's crime; but Eleanor rescues her friend and leads him to safety. Simon, overcome with guilt, races into the burning chapel to save his brother and perishes in the flames.
