Synopsis

Paddy, a butcher boy in Dublin, Ireland, helps to support his family which has been deserted by his father. He seldom stays home, however, since he is constantly nagged by his mother, his sister, Josie, and his older brother, Billy. Paddy's pub companion, middle-aged Harry Redmond, has never held a job, but he nevertheless encourages Paddy to improve himself. After being seduced by one of his butcher store customers, a lusty widow named Claire Kearney, Paddy becomes her paid nightly companion until he takes a job as a mail clerk with an insurance company. In his new position, he falls in love with Maureen, a pretty secretary, and also becomes involved with Breeda, a woman of masochistic sexual inclinations who prefers making love with two men at once. Depressed by the death of his invalid younger brother, Larry, and upset by Maureen's suggestions of marriage, Paddy quits his job. Maureen reveals that she is pregnant and announces that she will marry another man since Paddy is unwilling to assume the responsibility. The two part, and Paddy resumes his carefree pursuits, while Harry latches onto a wealthy American tourist, Irenee.
