Synopsis

Captain William Carson, a Department of Justice investigator, bears a striking resemblance to Trigger Mallory, the leader of a gang of outlaws who has been robbing the U.S. mails of negotiable bonds. Consequently, when Trigger, who has been imprisoned for his crimes, is about to be released from jail, the government decides to detain him and have Carson take his place. Posing as Trigger, Carson rejoins the gang, fooling everyone except Slim Marsh, who becomes suspicious of Carson's actions. While Carson tries to allay Slim's suspicions, the real Trigger sees a newspaper story announcing his release and breaks out of jail. To warn Carson of Trigger's escape, Magpie, another federal agent, rides into town, but Carson is out riding the range with Trigger's gang, planning a big cattle raid. Making up an excuse to absent himself, Carson leaves the gang to call the FBI, and when Slim follows him, Carson shoots him. Meanwhile, the real Trigger comes to town and tells Jessie Treadwell, his sweetheart, about the imposture. As Magpie eavesdrops on their conversation, Trigger captures him and, after locking him in a room, rides for the gang's hideout, where he confronts Carson. In the ensuing brawl, Carson escapes and is met by Magpie. The two agents then set a trap for the outlaws, after which Carson escorts Trigger back to prison.
