Synopsis
As outlaw Jim Hackett leads his gang in a robbery of the Red Bluff bank, he shoots and kills the sheriff after being mortally wounded himself. Before Hackett dies, he tells his son Bob that Bob's real father, Robert Conroy, was a Santa Fe marshal who was killed in the line of duty by a man named Jackson. Hackett, who was Conroy's deputy, took Bob, a motherless toddler, with him and gradually turned to a life of crime. Stunned to hear that Hackett was not his real father, Bob leaves with his pal, Buckshot Peters, for Santa Fe. On the way, Bob, who now goes by the name Conroy, and Buckshot thwart a band of rustlers, led by Trigger McGurn and his henchman Chuck, from attacking rancher Ruth Gordon and her young sister Winky. Ruth explains to Bob that due to the unfair prices offered by cattle buyer and banker Henry Jackson, who runs the town of Santa Fe with Trigger as his gunman, she has to herd her cattle to Kansas. Ruth resigns herself to selling her herd to Jackson, but Bob promises to help her. In town, Mayor Ward explains to Bob that all the previous marshals have been killed while standing up to Trigger and his men. When Bob sees his father's name on the back of the marshal's badge offered by Ward, he grimly accepts the job and warns Buckshot that the time has come for them to go straight. Bob intends to return the loot from the Red Bluff bank robbery, but in the meantime uses it to trick Jackson into thinking that he has enough money to buy Ruth's cattle himself. Jackson gives in and offers Ruth a fair price for her herd, and later, Bob is also able to force Jackson to pay for the cattle that his gang has rustled from rancher Dan Kellogg. Meanwhile, Steve, a member of Hackett's gang, arrives in town and Trigger hires him to kill Bob. Steve confronts Bob, who thought that he had been killed along with his father, and demands his share of the loot. After Bob refuses, Steve forces a showdown, and Bob outdraws and shoots him. Soon after, Jackson receives a wanted poster for Bob, and he and Trigger deduce that Bob must still be in possession of the loot from Red Bluff. Determined to get Bob and Buckshot out of the way so that he can search for the money, Jackson orders his stooge, Judge Turner, to send Bob out of town on an errand. Jackson and Trigger then find the hidden loot in the jail's office, but Winky, who had accidentally been locked in a cell by Buckshot, sees it all and informs Bob when he and Buckshot return. Realizing that they must retrieve the money before Jackson can use it against them, Bob and Buckshot dynamite the bank safe where it is being kept, but the outlaws are alerted by the noise and come running. Jackson tauntingly tells Bob that he killed Bob's real father, and Bob shoots Chuck, Trigger and Jackson during the ensuing gun battle. Later, the El Paso marshal arrives to return Bob to Red Bluff, where he must stand trial for the bank robbery. Mayor Ward assures Bob that his heroic actions in eradicating Jackson's gang will result in leniency for his prior crimes. Winky sadly watches Bob and Buckshot depart, but Ruth promises her that although Bob Hackett is leaving, Bob Conroy will return soon.
