Synopsis
Bedrock Brown, an old prospector, combs the great Alaskan wilderness accompanied by his friends, bear cubs Tom and Jerry, in search of gold and his missing friend, Hank Jones, who has failed to return from a prospecting expedition. Running out of supplies, Bedrock returns to the Taku River Trading Post, which is run by Taku Mary, to earn money by helping with the salmon run. Also at the post is Little Joy, Hank's daughter, who has never given up hope that her father will return. After the salmon run ends, Bedrock returns to the hills and Little Joy also decides to search the hills for her father. Soon after, Little Joy's mother notices the girl's absence, and Taku Mary takes off in her plane to look for her. In the wilderness, Little Joy is saved from the jaws of a wolf pack by an itinerant trapper who decides to hold her for ransom. Meanwhile, Bedrock loses his boat when it is capsized by melting glaciers, and he and the bears swim to land, where he discovers the lost mine that has become Hank's burial ground. While Bedrock strikes gold, Little Joy escapes her captor and is led to Bedrock by his wandering bears. The old prospector promises Little Joy he will take her home, but without a boat they must cross the treacherous ice caps. As the ice floes begin to break apart and a blizzard approaches, Mary sees Bedrock and Little Joy and returns to the settlement for help. Returning with the sled dogs, Mary arrives just in time to rescue Little Joy, but is too late for Bedrock, who dies in her arms.
