Synopsis

Dorothy Brooks, a San Francisco department store clerk, is falsely accused of stealing lingerie by her boss, Dickman, who then tries to force himself on her in his apartment. When Dorothy resists Dickman's kisses and pushes him away, he falls out of his second-story window and cracks his skull. Terrified, Dorothy flees the building but is spotted by Dickman's neighbor, who describes her to the police and to Rorke, the store's detective. Dorothy seeks refuge with her best friend, dressmaker Kitty Kennedy, and travels with her to a resort hotel in Del Monte, California, where Kitty is to prepare a trousseau for Vera Van Alstyne, a wealthy socialite. Unknown to Dorothy and Kitty, Vera's fiancé, Donald Cabot, is the son of the department owner, who is waiting at the hotel for Vera's arrival. When Donald sees Dorothy in one of Vera's dresses, he mistakes her for his fiancée and kisses her. While Dorothy worries that Donald is actually a detective, Donald learns that Vera has changed her mind about marrying him and decides to pursue Dorothy. At the same time, Donald's father is apprised of his son's romantic escapades and sends Rorke to the resort to investigate. Donald eventually tricks his way into Dorothy's room but is rejected by the frightened clerk. Determined to win Dorothy, Donald sends Kitty a phony telegram with instructions to follow Vera to his aunt's estate. There, Donald reveals his ruse and proposes to Dorothy, who turns him down because of her fugitive status. Soon after, Donald's father arrives at the estate and accuses Dorothy of gold digging. While Dorothy tells Mr. Cabot that she has no intention of marrying Donald, Rorke enters and identifies her as Dickman's assailant. Dorothy then confesses her situation to Donald, who defies his father and pledges his unwavering support. At police headquarters, a recovered Dickman charges Dorothy with theft and attempted murder but is unmasked by the police captain, who reveals that several salesclerks had identified him as the lingerie thief. Free of all blame, Dorothy accepts Donald's proposal as well as Mr. Cabot's blessings.
