Synopsis

In the rural town of Oakdale, a group of boys belonging to the "Lion's Den" club swim before school begins. Chris Harper, the president of the club, has just quit school to work at a grocery store. He runs across family friend Dr. David "Doc" Elliott on a house call. Chris hopes to follow in Doc's footsteps, as he is already treating the town's animal population. Doc warns Chris that he must go back to school to get enough credits for college, but Chris explains that he and his mother Julie need the money he earns. Doc gets an unexpected visit from his daughter Betty, who has been living with Doc's wealthy ex-wife since their divorce. At dinner, Chris immediately falls for Betty. Jimmy, a boy who has been denied membership to the Lion's Den because he is too young, watches Chris sneak Betty into the clubhouse. Jimmy is later caught in the clubhouse and is sentenced to "trial by water." When the boys throw Jimmy in the swimming hole, however, he hits his head on a rock and Chris rushes him to Doc. After a overnight bedside vigil, Jimmy awakes the next morning and is told he is now a Lion. Betty, recognizing the attraction between her father and Julie, conspires with Chris to bring the two together. Complications arise when William Baker arrives in town. Baker, an attorney for Chris's grandfather, the wealthy John Harper, has come to get custody of Chris for the old man. Julie, realizing that Chris could go to a top medical school with his grandfather's money, agrees to give up Chris, but Chris refuses. Against the interest of his client, Baker agrees with Chris. Baker, who has been ordered by Harper to stay in Oakdale until Julie agrees to give up custody, then becomes a boarder with the family. Betty worries about Baker's romantic interest in Julie and confronts him, telling him of the planned relationship between her father and Julie, but Baker refuses to back down. Harper arrives in town in his limousine only to run over and kill the dog of one of Chris's friends. When Harper offers to pay the boy twenty dollars for the dead dog, Chris threatens to strike him. Harper then goes to Julie and offers her $5,000 for custody of Chris. Doc and Betty arrive as Julie and Chris order Harper to leave. After Doc and Julie become engaged, Baker offers to sue Doc for breach of promise if he tries to back out. At the swimming hole, Chris and Betty dream about life with Chris as a doctor and Betty his nurse, only to be teased as the other club members emerge from the bushes.
