Synopsis
When blues singer Eleanor Spenser sees nightclub owner Tony Pearl murdered by gangster Mike Scarlotti, she flees Chicago and heads West by bus, while her picture is printed in newspapers across the country. During a stopover in Turquoise City, New Mexico, Martin Simms, the crooked owner of the Blue Moon saloon, befriends Eleanor, hoping to collect a reward from Scarlotti by sending him a telegram regarding Eleanor's whereabouts. When their bus is held up by the O'Keefe Brothers, a local aspiring singing troupe who seeks publicity, singer and sheriff Gene Autry promises to arrest them. Simms then catches Eleanor trying to leave town and tries to convince her to stay. When Gene arrives on the scene, recognizing Eleanor from the bus, she introduces herself as "Jane Edwards," and Simms adds that she is the new entertainer at his saloon. After arresting all of the O'Keefe Brothers except Buck and Tom, Gene, sees Eleanor's picture in the paper, then goes to the Blue Moon to protect her against Simms, and sings with her. Finding Buck and Tom in their hideout at the old corral, Gene hires the O'Keefes to perform at the town plaza for Turquoise City's celebration of its new dam. During Gene's concert, Scarlotti arrives and threatens Simms to make him tell where Eleanor is, but Gene's deputy Frog warns Eleanor in time to take her to the old corral to hide. Scarlotti follows them, however, and Gene must recruit the O'Keefes as his posse. When the O'Keefes stampede cattle, Scarlotti's men scatter, and Gene arrests the criminal. Eleanor then names Scarlotti as Pearl's murderer, and Gene arrests Simms for intimidating a witness. After singing a song, Gene kisses Eleanor.
