While robbing the Lynwood bank with two other men, masked bandit Deuce is wounded in the arm by townsman Clancy. When Deuce arrives in nearby Coldwater to deliver the stolen money to his secret partner, Lucky Dog saloon owner Blackie Martin, Clancy spots Deuce's wounded arm tied with a bandana and tries to convince the sheriff to arrest him. Instead, the sheriff offers to help Clancy gather enough evidence to put all three bandits in jail. Although the town assumes that widow Ma Posey lives alone at her ranch, she is actually harboring the three bandits and acts as a nefarious gang leader. Ma orders the men to rob the Wells Fargo stagecoach carrying the mine payroll. Deuce returns to Coldwater and enters the bank, where he, Clancy and the sheriff witness another robbery. Posing as a masked bandit, U.S. marshal Johnny Mack Brown holds bank patron Goldie at gunpoint, then forces Goldie's fiancée, Jimmy Redding, the bank cashier, to hand over the money. After apparently shooting and apparently killing Jimmy, Johnny flees town. Although the sheriff's posse loses Johnny, Deuce continues to search for him. After surprising Deuce among the boulders, Johnny boasts about robbing the bank. Later at the doctor's office, Jimmy, who feigned being killed by Johnny in order to help him apprehend the real robbers, promises Johnny that he will stay in hiding and keep the truth from Goldie. Johnny then returns the stolen money to the banker, Mr. Masters, and plots with Clancy and the sheriff to catch the bandits. At the Lucky Dog gambling table, Goldie recognizes the gold coins that Johnny has bet as the same ones she traded for cash at the bank just before the robbery and begins to suspect that Johnny killed Jimmy and robbed the bank. Deuce recognizes Johnny as the robber he encountered in the boulders and shares the information with Blackie. Later at the ranch, Blackie tells Ma about Johnny. Ma then plots with Blackie and bank examiner Fleming, who is in league with them, to rob the stage that evening. Meanwhile, in Clancy's room, Goldie surprises Johnny and Clancy and, holding them at gunpoint, accuses Johnny of Jimmy's murder. Johnny explains that the robbery and murder were staged and Jimmy is alive and in hiding. Goldie then relates that she heard Blackie and Deuce discuss robbing the stage at Walker's Pass that evening. With no time to lose, Johnny and Clancy race to stop the stage before it reaches the pass. As Ma's men watch, Johnny stages a hold-up. When Ma learns about the robbery, she has Deuce and several other bandits bring Johnny to her. Johnny offers to give them a cut of the payroll robbery, but Ma demands the whole amount. She orders the men to capture Clancy and then threatens to kill him unless Johnny reveals the location of the money. After Johnny names the location, Woodland Hills, three of Ma's men force Clancy to ride with them there to retrieve the money, while Ma holds Johnny hostage inside the house. Back at the bank, Fleming discovers that Masters and the sheriff are heading toward Woodland Hills and hurries to alert Ma. As Ma and Deuce race to Woodland Hills, leaving Fleming to guard Johnny, the sheriff's posse surrounds the three bandits, forces them to surrender and free Clancy. At the ranch, meanwhile, Johnny starts a fight with Fleming, who is shot in the struggle. Johnny escapes just as Ma and Deuce return. Believing that Johnny is trapped in a canyon, Ma leaves Deuce to guard him while she attempts to free her men, who are now in jail. From high on a neighboring ridge, Clancy spots Johnny, fires a shot to get his attention and then rides to the canyon. Just as Deuce spots Clancy and prepares to shoot, Johnny shoots and wounds Deuce. In town, Ma dupes the sheriff into believing that Deuce and his men have taken over her ranch. When the sheriff sends his men to the ranch, leaving him alone in his office, Ma holds him at gunpoint and orders him to release the three men captured at Woodland Hills. As they escape, one of the men shoots Ma. Clancy and Johnny meet the sheriff's posse on the trail and they ride together to the ranch, where they force Fleming and remaining bandits, who have gathered there, to surrender. Later when the banker's association offers Johnny a reward for his efforts, he gives it to Jimmy and Goldie as an early wedding present.
