Synopsis
As a man identified only as "You" walks along the Kungsleden, an extended mountain trail in Lapland, he recalls a time, 10 years earlier, when he spent 3 days in the same region with Leni, a young Jewish refugee from a concentration camp. On their first night together, Leni virtually seduces You; the next evening, they quarrel when Leni accuses You of anti-Semitism; and, on the third night, You rapes Leni when she first encourages, then rejects, his advances. After reminiscing about their brief, unhappy affair, You finds evidence that Leni also has returned to the trail and is somewhere in the vicinity. Arriving at the spot where they parted 10 years ago, You finds Leni's dead body in a mountain stream. You buries her, then goes to a nearby cottage where he and Leni once spent some time. Discovering that another man has been sleeping there, he concludes that this stranger must have murdered Leni. Though he becomes lost in the mountains, You--obsessed with a feeling of guilt and a need for vengeance--tracks down the stranger, who offers to help him get back on the trail. You causes his death and then walks off uncertainly into the mountain mist.
