Synopsis

In an isolated castle on a lake island in Sweden, aging Hugo Falsen jealously guards his second wife Eleanore, a seductive young woman passionately devoted to her idle, parasitic brother, Sebastian. The family dresses in 18th century costumes under orders from Hugo's elder sister Agathe, an authoritarian eccentric who lives in the past. A senile grandmother cackles from her wheelchair, while a solemn butler glides about the premises. The arrival of Hugo's cousin Eric, who has left a scandal behind him in Stockholm, throws the household into turmoil. He soon falls in love with Eleanore and discovers the scope of Hugo's jealousy; what at first appears to be a ghost is actually Hugo's first wife, Ophelie, believed to have drowned in the lake but actually very much alive, albeit half crazy. Since divorce would be impossible, Hugo hides her in a secret bedroom, where she carries on an affair with Sebastian. Eric also learns from Eleanore that Christian, a friend who disappeared the year before, was murdered by Hugo in a fit of jealousy, and he begins to fear for his own safety. Despite several attempts by Hugo and Agathe to murder him, Eric escapes across the newly-frozen lake to inform his uncle, the Minister of Justice in Stockholm, of the strange goings-on at the chateau. Soon afterwards, a handsome reporter arrives at the castle to profile the family for a magazine article.
