Synopsis
Disillusioned with his jaded life in Rome, Enrico, a middle-aged Italian film director and novelist, travels to Polynesia to film a travelogue. He meets an American fellow-passenger, Margaret, and takes part in an unsuccessful search for her missing husband. He becomes romantically involved with a young Tahitian woman, Matae, and rapidly becomes immersed in the hedonistic lifestyle of Papeete with its endless round of drinking and lovemaking. Later he leaves his group to live with two other women, Tepare and Turere, in a deserted mansion. The news of his mother's death comes as a painful shock, and he finds that his aimless existence no longer satisfies him. He finds no solace in Margaret's materialistic outlook and he retires to a small uncharted island whose native inhabitants lead a simple existence. He becomes friendly with a young boy and meets a devoted priest who teaches Christianity to the natives. From this encounter comes the realization that all of his efforts to escape from his responsibilities have been futile. Enriched by his new perspective on life, Enrico returns to Rome.
