Synopsis

In Nazi-occupied Zagreb kindly Mr. Vojnovic arranges a marriage of convenience between his Catholic son Ivo and family friend Ruth, a 17-year-old Jewess. Although Ivo, ostracized by schoolmates and his former girl friend, initially rebels and reproaches Ruth, the couple fall deeply in love. While enjoying a rare outing, however, Ruth is captured by the Nazis and interned in a concentration camp brothel. Her husband traces her to the camp, run by a former comrade. During their escape attempt Ruth's strength fails her and she is unable to scale the barbed wire fence. As the current is turned on, Ivo takes her hand and both are killed.
