Synopsis

Rasputin, a lustful peasant monk, cures Alexei, heir apparent to the Russian throne, of hemophilia and wins the complete confidence of the czarina. Thus begins Rasputin's rise to power and influence in the imperial court. Enemies dispatch a woman to stab the monk, but their plot is foiled when Rasputin miraculously recovers from his wounds. After Russia enters the Great War, Rasputin's association with arms merchants and other speculators lends credence to the supposition that he is a German spy. He is attracted to Irina, Prince Yousoupoff's wife, and Yousoupoff, one of a group of conspirators determined to kill Rasputin, lures him to his home on the pretext of meeting Irina. There, they attempt to poison him, but he merely falls asleep from the cyanide. Panic-striken, Yousoupoff empties a revolver into Rasputin, who even then does not die but bellows in his rage. He eventually falls to the ground, and the assassins dump his body into the Neva.
