Synopsis

When emotional and sexual inhibitions threaten to destroy his pending marriage, 35-year-old Jan returns to the manor home of his youth to reflect on the causes of his dilemma. As he recalls his childhood, his most vivid memories are of his beautiful and extravagant mother, Irene. At the age of 12, Jan was present while Irene gave birth to a stillborn child at an orgiastic party attended by all of her bizarre and perverted friends. Always eager to attract his mother's attention, Jan would crawl under her skirts while she made love, or if she were alone, he would put on her jewelry and makeup and parade before her. His feelings soon became more incestuous, and he was delighted when she dried his naked body or allowed him to sleep in her bed. Following her death in an automobile accident, he remained for a while with his eccentric Aunt Astrid, who read to him from the Bible and taught him to believe in the Resurrection. But his aunt also died, and Jan grew into manhood alone. His fiancée, Mariana, who bears a striking resemblance to Irene, stays with Jan at the mansion and tries desperately to help him by offering her love and understanding. Realizing that he can never be truly free while the mansion and its memories of his grotesque childhood remain, Jan invites all of his mother's parasitic friends to a final party and tells them that he intends to blow up the mansion. As they race from the premises, they carry off any treasures they can lift. When they are gone, Jan and Mariana watch as the mansion is destroyed by fire.
