Synopsis
Talent contest winners Charlie and Eleanor Kendall are given a hero's sendoff by their hometown of Windebaggo, Missouri as they leave for Hollywood to seek their fame and fortune. The brother and sister singing-and-dancing team have little luck, however, upon their arrival in Hollywood, and are soon reduced to sleeping in parking lots and stealing milk from cats. Clark Phillips, a newspaper columnist, sees Charlie and Eleanor practicing their routines and offers to get them an audition at the Sunset Club, though he has some difficulty convincing the club owner, Percival J. Percival, to put on their act. Unfortunately, he also buys them a meal, and the two starving adolescents stuff themselves so much with hot dogs that they are unable to perform at the nightclub that night. Later, after the club closes, the Kendalls perform their act for the club's staff, who are all impressed by the teenagers' talents. Rita, a hat check girl, then allows the two to stay with her, while also getting them jobs at the club: Charlie as a messenger boy and Eleanor as a novelty salesgirl. The teenagers are fired, however, when a real baby--the niece of cigarette girl Janie--is found crying in Eleanor's novelty carriage. More complications arise when they receive a telegram from their mother, stating that she and some of Windebaggo's finest are heading to Hollywood to see them perform at the nightclub. There, Eleanor's "soupy hash" so impresses Gaston, the club's chef, that she is asked to prepare it for the patrons. While the Kendalls work in the kitchen, Clark gets Percival to leave the club by telling him that his ex-wife Gracie is due to arrive any minute. Unfortunately, Percival returns and finds Charlie and Eleanor hiding in the kitchen. With the help of the staff, however, Percival is locked in the meatlocker and the Kendalls are allowed to perform their act. Later, a food manufacturer, who is impressed by Eleanor's "soupy hash," agrees to build a plant in Windebaggo to produce it.
