Synopsis

Candida leaves school and is taken to live with her two maiden aunts, Celia and Mary, when her father dies. Bored with her aunts, she travels to Paris where she has an affair with a French student and returns to England pregnant. No longer able to live with her aunts, she moves into her father's house where she and her newly-born child are looked after by the family caretaker, Savage. Candida again gets the urge to travel and visits Italy with Miss Grimsby, an elderly schoolteacher. There, a desperate mother hands Candida a baby and disappears. Candida smuggles the baby back to England and discovers that she is again pregnant, this time after a brief encounter with an American. Celia and Mary then negotiate for Candida to marry her dimwitted cousin, Freddie. Forced by circumstances into accepting the proposal, Candida, at the last moment, tells Freddie that she cannot go through with the loveless marriage. Returning to her father's house, she realizes that she has always been in love with Savage.
