Synopsis

Roberte and Milan have been bound with an all-consuming love. After 10 years of marriage, however, they must face the realities of life in their middle age. They retire to a country estate, where Milan, formerly a sportscar racer, unsuccessfully tries to write his memoirs. Roberte, seeking to stem the erosion of their love, finds solace in gambling and drinking. The couple meet Hélène, a schoolteacher in the nearby village; and despite the objections of Hélène's fiancé (Duval, a soldier), the married couple and the teacher become constant companions. Roberte's attachment to the girl is such that through Hélène she relives her early and happier years with Milan; for Milan's part, he falls in love with Hélène but is fearful of causing her the kind of unhappiness that has befallen Roberte. His dilemma is solved when he accepts an offer to resume his racing career; and though either of the two women would willingly accompany him, he decides to leave them both behind. [In the original version, Roberte commits suicide when her husband leaves.]
