Synopsis

Neighboring ranchers Lockhart and Maitland suspect each other of cattle rustling and each request help from the Texas Rangers. Maitland's son Ranny, a Ranger, pretends to be on Lockhart's side in order to solve the case. Ranny first goes to the Lockhart ranch and agrees to adopt a pseudonym so that he can work undercover. Maitland tries to discuss the problem with Lockhart but is mysteriously killed, and Lockhart is arrested for his murder. While in jail, Lockhart tells Ranny that Maitland had proof that cowhands from both ranches had formed a rustling gang. When Ranny goes to find the evidence in his father's safe, he discovers that Lockhart's foreman, Brophy, and his father's foreman, Gilman, have blown it open, and Lockhart's son Lafe is incriminated by the evidence and is arrested. Ranny believes Lafe is innocent and allows both Lockharts to escape in order to form a posse to capture the real outlaws. Ranny is captured by Brophy at Blockade Canyon where the posse was to form, and it is revealed that Brophy knows Ranny's true identity because he overheard the Maitland-Lockhart discussion. Alice confounds Brophy's plan of killing her loved ones in a stampede, and Ranny fights with the outlaw while the posse captures the rest of the rustlers. With peace restored, Ranny decides to stay on with Alice.

The working title of this film was Outlaw Brands. Many similarities exist between this film and the 1939 Columbia picture The Stranger From Texas (see below), however, different writers are credited in the latter film.
