Synopsis
Marie Baldwin leaves her husband, Steve, changes her name to that of a nurse killed in African riots, and marries engineer Chris Aldrich. Steve tracks her down, gets a job as a handyman on Chris's estate, and tries to blackmail Marie. Marie, while appearing to yield to the blackmail demands, plans to murder Steve. She tampers with the car, but the plan goes wrong, and Chris is injured instead. While recuperating, Chris overhears Steve and Marie discussing a murder and thinks they plan to kill him. He decides to retaliate. The local vicar, who had known the nurse whose name Marie assumed, comes to see her and is murdered by Steve and buried in the backyard. Chris disappears after fabricating evidence of his own murder. Steve and Marie are brought to trial for the murder of Chris, but they are acquitted. Chris then confronts Steve and Marie and is nearly killed in a fight with Steve. The police stop the fight, but Steve is sure he won't be charged with assaulting a supposedly dead man. His confidence wanes as he hears police shovels digging in the backyard where the vicar is buried. Steve and Marie know they won't be acquitted this time.
