Synopsis
Barry Webster is a bank clerk whose modest salary affords few luxuries for his wife Muriel. Mrs. Fleming, Barry's mother-in-law, nags him constantly, complaining that the couple lives near the poverty line. She eventually talks Barry into stealing money from the bank where he is employed, but he is caught in the act, tried and sentenced to jail. In prison, Barry begins to disintegrate emotionally, especially when he learns that, at Mrs. Fleming's prompting, Muriel, who had promised to wait for him, has divorced him to marry William King, an industrialist. Barry vows that he will avenge himself on Muriel, Mrs. Fleming and King, and after he is released, he surreptitiously enters the King home, causing the jealous King to suspect a tryst between Barry and Muriel. Suddenly, a shot is heard and King falls dead, and although both Barry and Muriel are holding pistols, neither of them has been fired. Barry regrets his desire for revenge and, in order to protect Muriel from suspicion, writes a note confessing the murder of King. However, Muriel soon joins Barry in his hideout on a deserted gambling boat, and together they elude the police in a chase via motor boat and automobile. In the meantime, Mrs. Kenilworthy, the King's maid, confesses to the murder, saying that she shot King to protect Muriel from him. Barry and Muriel are reunited and move to another part of the country to start a new life, casting off Mrs. Fleming forever.
