Synopsis

Although warned by her guardian, John Gale, that she only has $300 left in her annual allowance, New York debutante Diana Wyman flippantly attends a party with her wild friends. When the police raid the party, Diana is caught dancing in her undergarments, and a suggestive photograph of her appears in the newspaper. Distraught, John reveals to Diana that a clause in her father's will states that if she ever brings shame to the family name, she will lose her inheritance. Convinced that terminating Diana's allowance is the only way to discipline her, John, who adores his ward, tells her that she must now depend on him for funds. The head-strong Diana, however, announces that she is leaving New York to fend for herself. Concerned, John asks George Duncan, a young employee who is scheduled to depart for Siberia in three weeks, to follow Diana. George soon joins the debutante on a New Orleans-bound train, where he also meets Detective Blake, who is following a passenger named Maria Lamer. After Diana recognizes George from Gale's office, she slips off the train with Maria and takes a bus to New Orleans, where Mardi Gras celebrations are in progress. Eventually the women are discovered by Detective Blake and George at a nightclub where Maria is a dancer. When Maria, who is actually a cohort of pickpocket Don Pedro, fakes a sprained ankle, Diana unwittingly offers to cover for her at the club, unaware that her friend is planning to flee the city with some of Pedro's booty. In a Mardi Gras mask, Diana performs Maria's routine in front of George, who is shocked when he discovers her ruse. As Diana approaches the dressing room, Don Pedro, who is unaware of Maria's absence, shoves a bundle of jewels in her hand. Alerted, Blake searches the dressing room and finally catches Diana with the booty. Although George and Diana protest their innocence, Blake hauls them to the police station, and John and Diana's aunt, Jane Stevens, are called. After the police catch Maria and Don Pedro with another set of jewels, Maria vouches for Diana, and Diana announces to John that she is going to follow George to Siberia.
