Synopsis

After Jack Wood learns that his brother, a bank teller, has been killed in a robbery, he goes to Payson City to secretly discover the killers' identities. On his way he finds the Mexicali Kid near death in the desert, and the two become friends after Jack saves his life. Unknown to Jack, the Kid was fleeing a posse after robbing a stagecoach. When the two reach town, the driver of the stage identifies the Kid, but Jack steps in and says that he dared the Kid to rob the stage as a joke. After the Kid returns the valuables, the driver drops the charges, but when the Kid's pinto is indentified as one that was reported stolen, he and Jack quickly leave town. While on the run, Jack takes refuge at the Payson Ranch, run by Jean Carter, and discovers that the ranch has been the victim of some mysterious robberies and killings. Although Jean, who helps Jack, thinks that her foreman, Fredric Gorson, can handle the situation, Jack suspects otherwise. When he and the Kid meet again, Jack learns that the Kid is working for Gorson and asks to be introduced to him as a member of the gang. Impressed by Jack's demeanor, Gorson decides to use him to pretend to be the long-lost Payson heir. By terms of Payson's will, if the son comes to claim his inheritance within five years, the ranch will be his. Otherwise, it will be turned over to Jean. Jack goes along with the plan, but secretly does so to help Jean, with whom he has fallen in love. As soon as Jack's claim is accepted, Gorson sets out to kill him and take over the ranch, but the Kid decides to help Jack as he realizes that his friend is in trouble. Jack escapes a trap set for him by Gorson with the Kid's help, but the Kid is wounded and dies. Jack finally is able to expose Gorson and his gang to the local sheriff, who secretly had been working with Jack all along. Although the sheriff offers Jack a job, he decides to stay and help Jean, who offers him a lifetime career.
