Hershell and Thadeus are two chess-playing brothers who have a serious rivalry over the chessboard and a woman. Hershell is a chess purist--the prodigal son--and Thadeus is a disciplined, ruthless competitor. Hershell spent four nomadic years in Europe, in the pursuit of "Jazz Chess": chess reduced to pure movement with no winner or loser. When he returns home, Thadeus is a financially successful Canadian Chess Champion. Thadeus is also engaged to Marsha, Hershell's former sweetheart. Discouraged by his future prospects and wanting Marsha back in his life, Hershell challenges Thadeus for the upcoming championship.
