Synopsis
When Oscar Diggs, a small-time circus magician with dubious ethics, is hurled from dusty Kansas to the vibrant Land of Oz, he thinks that fame and fortune are his for the taking, that is until he meets three witches, Theodora, Evanora and Glinda, who are not convinced he is the great wizard everyone has been expecting. Reluctantly drawn into the enormous problems facing the Land of Oz and its inhabitants, Oscar must find out who is good and who is evil before it is too late. Putting his magical arts to use through illusion, ingenuity, and even a bit of wizardry, Oscar transforms himself not only into the great and powerful Wizard of Oz but into a better man as well.

Project was conceived as a prequel to "The Wizard of Oz" (USA/1939) directed by Victor Fleming and starring Judy Garland, which was based on the novel "The Wonderful Wizard of Oz" written by L. Frank Baum. Because Warner Bros. controls the rights to the 1939 film, which it acquired from MGM for its library, the filmmakers were not allowed to reference any material unique to the film. Instead, they reference the 14 books about the fantasy world, written by Frank Baum and illustrated by William Wallace Denslow, which are in the public domain.

Robert Downey Jr. was in talks with producer Joe Roth to star before Sam Raimi joined the project in the summer of 2010. Unable to close a deal with Downey, the filmmakers approached Johnny Depp, who was interested but had a prior commitment to "The Lone Ranger." Five months before the July 2011 start of production, a deal was closed with James Franco to star.
Project was included on the 2010 Black List.
