Synopsis
Chang has been betrothed since birth to Peony Chin, daughter of the prime minister. When the couple are of marriageable age, Chin decides that his daughter can make a better match than the poverty-stricken orphan Chang, and he demands that the student pass the imperial exams. Chang goes to Chin's lakeside hut, where he studies and pines for Peony. The fairy Marina, an immortal 1,000-year-old carp, takes pity on Chang. Each night she takes the form of Peony Chin and visits Chang. When Chang approaches the real Peony, she turns him over to her father. Although Chin banishes Chang, his fairy lover brings him home. The pair are caught dancing by Chin, who summons Lord Pao to decide who is his real daughter. The fairy, however, duplicates the lord. Chin then commands a wicked sorcerer to fight against the couple. An underwater battle rages between Marina and her friends and the evil forces of Chin. The Goddess of Mercy intervenes, offering Marina mortal human form, which she accepts in order to wed Chang.
