Synopsis

François, a 10-year-old whose mother has abandoned him, is a ward of the state. The authorities place him in a foster home, but François does not adapt easily to his new surroundings. Because of his moodiness, his foster parents return him to the orphanage. François is next placed with the Minguets, an elderly couple whose own children have grown up and left home. François has trouble getting along with Raoul, an older boy who is also a foster child in the home of the affectionate Minguets. François grows fond of the Minguets, particularly of Madame Minguet's aged mother, Mémé. Mémé dies and François deeply suffers her loss. In spite of the Minguets' loving care, François remains troubled. He drops a cat down a stairwell to prove that the animal will land on its feet, and then tries to nurse it back to health. He causes a severe accident by throwing bars from a bridge and as a result is sent to a special school. All is not lost, however, for François knows that upon his release he can return to the Minguets.
