Synopsis

Just outside a trading post, Sergeant Tom McKenna, a Royal Canadian Mountie, pursues an outlaw in a high-speed horse chase. The outlaw, Charley, goes to a hideout, where he is killed by his boss for leading the Mountie to him. The boss manages to escape without being seen, and Tom returns to his post in Elkhorn, where he is chastised by his superior, Inspector Oliver P. Logan. A town "law and order" meeting is held at the Morgan Hay, Grain, and Fuel store, and fifteen citizens, led by businessman Morgan and rancher Kennedy, form a vigilante group to capture a band of outlaws whom the Mounties have failed to apprehend. They use rancher Kennedy as a decoy, and when a highwayman attempts to rob him, he is captured by Morgan and company. The highwayman turns out to be Tom, who is taken back to the Mountie post, court-martialed, and publicly flogged. Tom tells his brother Randall, a fellow Mountie, that he attempted the robbery to pay off his gambling debts. Tom's disgrace is further enhanced as his intended victim is the father of his fiancée Shirley. Two weeks after his discharge, Tom robs the local bank of $5,000. He is not only chased by a posse, but also by Pierre, a member of the outlaw gang. Pierre offers to introduce Tom into the outlaw gang, which would provide him with a hideout and protection, for half of his bank loot. Tom agrees and is taken to the hideout, where the boss remains hidden in another room. To test his loyalty, Tom is sent with Pierre and the other outlaws to the Kennedy ranch, in order to rob its safe of another $5,000. Tom opens the Kennedy safe, only to find it empty and then be discovered by Shirley. She chastises her former fiancé as her father arrives. Back at the hideout, Tom is told he is still on probation as a train robbery of the "Limited" is planned. While Pierre and Tom act as look-outs at the Saskatchewan station, the gang attempts to rob the train, only to be captured in a Mountie ambush. The two outlaws return to the hideout after they rob the train station. Pierre suspects Tom, and his suspicions are confirmed when he finds a letter stating that Tom is working undercover. The boss is revealed to be Morgan, who realizes that only Tom and Inspector Logan are aware of Tom's true vocation. Morgan then plans an elaborate hold-up to seek revenge. At the Saskatchewan Mining Company, Pierre and Tom rob the safe as Morgan calls the Mounties himself to report the robbery. As the Mounties arrive, Morgan knocks out Tom. A gunfight ensues, and Morgan fatally shoots Logan with Tom's gun. Tom is then sent out on his horse, only to be captured by his brother with the still-smoldering gun strapped to his leg. Tom escapes Randall and goes after Morgan and Pierre. Morgan and Tom are captured by the Mounties and returned to the post. There, banker Wylie informs all that he was told by Logan of Tom's true mission, and Tom is not only reinstated and promoted to the new inspector of the post, but wins back the love of Shirley as well.
