Synopsis
Anna, a poor country girl, has been working for a middle-class family for the past 10 years. The house is an old one-family home in a suburb of Athens. This particular warm Sunday is a special day for Anna. Her mistress, an elderly lady who looks upon Anna as a foster daughter, together with her daughters and her sons-in-law, has chosen a man in order to secure Anna's future. Cosmas arrives in the afternoon and the introduction to Anna takes place. The couple visit Athens together, but miss the curfew set by the mistress. The delay gives rise to a change in attitude towards Anna. Everyone now treats her harshly. They no longer desire Cosmas as a husband. In order to terminate the engagement and to keep Anna in the services of the old lady, they ask for the help of Anna's mother. Lacking the strength to free herself from the yoke of her mistress and the responsibilities towards her family, Anna submits to a joyless life of servitude.
