Synopsis
When stewardess Ann Parker sings to calm her passengers during a stormy flight, she is fired by her supervisor, Cheever Chesney, for acting undignified. Ann is consoled by Mike Connors, the publicist for Frankie Carle's band, who invites her to the club where the band is playing. They arrive just as the band's vocalist, Mary Lou, quits the band cold to accept an offer for a screen test. Encouraged by Mike and her boyfriend, pilot Steve Roberts, Ann auditions for Carle and is hired as the band's new vocalist on the condition that she assume the name "Mary Lou," a trademark of the Carle band. Ann then accompanies the band to New York to rehearse for the opening of a new show at Murry Harris' Regent Club. Meanwhile, the airline president berates Chesney for firing Ann and orders him to hire her back. When Mary Lou's screen test falls through, she flies to New York, reclaims the name "Mary Lou" and threatens to sue Carle and Harris unless she is reinstated in the band. Heartbroken, Ann accepts Chesney's offer to return to the airline. Upon learning of the turn of events, Steve declares that no one can own the name "Mary Lou" and decides to search for the original holder of the title. On opening night, Steve locates Eve Summers, the first Mary Lou, who has retired from show business. After determining that Ann is on a plane bound for New York, Steve phones Mike and urges him to keep Mary Lou off the stage until Ann arrives. Mike delays the show until Steve and Ann show up with Eve, and all ends happily as Ann becomes the new Mary Lou and the featured vocalist of the band.
