Synopsis
Claude Avram, a Jewish encyclopedia salesman in Paris, falls in love with and impregnates Isabelle Schmoll, the daughter of a wealthy Belgian diamond merchant. Anxious to do the right thing, Claude asks for and is granted permission to marry her. It is decided that before the wedding Claude should visit Antwerp to meet the rest of Isabelle's family; before leaving, however, Claude goes for an English lesson and becomes infatuated with Helen, his beautiful tutor. Despite this new love, he dutifully goes to Belgium with Isabelle and her parents. After meeting the rest of the family, particularly Isabelle's obese sister, Marthe, Claude becomes apprehensive and, using his English lessons as an excuse, rushes back to Paris and Helen. During their idyllic weekend, Helen agrees to break her engagement to an airline pilot and marry Claude, but after Claude announces the decision to Isabelle and her family, he learns that Helen has decided to marry the pilot instead. While the Schmoll family try to find a solution to the dilemma of their daughter's pregnancy, Claude effects a reconciliation with Isabelle, and the two are married. By the time 5 years have passed, and Isabelle is awaiting the birth of her second child, Claude realizes that he is a reasonably happy man.
