Synopsis
The stormy marriage between Bret Howard, an aspiring songwriter, and his wife Margie, an aspiring radio scriptwriter, ends when Bret walks out on Margie after an argument. Soon after, Margie meets Rafael Gomez, a representative of a South American banana company, who is seeking a way to sell more bananas. Margie convices him that her radio idea will do the trick, and to win Gomez's account, Dixon, the radio manager, agrees to put Margie on salary. Meanwhile, Bret, still struggling to sell his songs, takes a job with the Pinwinkle piano company and is sent to repossess Margie's piano. At Margie's apartment, Bret plays the ballad that he has written for her and wins back her heart. After Bret leaves, Margie's friend Ruth Langley, a popular singer, hears the tune and takes it to sell to her publisher. That night, Margie is to meet Bret, but when she learns that Dixon is giving a party to convince Gomez to sponsor his favorite show, she decides to protect her interests and attend the party rather than meet Bret. After thwarting Dixon, Margie invites Gomez to come to her apartment the next morning and sign a contract. The following morning, Bret knocks on Margie's door and is in the process of chastising her when Gomez appears and, having discovered that Margie is married, threatens to kill her husband. To protect Bret, Margie pretends that he is the piano tuner and Gomez hits upon the idea of putting Bret and Margie in a compromising position so that Margie can win a divorce. Gomez hires two detectives to snap the incriminating photograph, but becomes confused when a number of other people arrive, including her friends, Joe and Al, two men from the piano company, and two radiator repair men. By the time the two detectives finally arrive, Bret and Margie realize that they still love each other. A furious Gomez is about to shoot Bret when Ruth arrives and announces that she has sold Bret's song and wins Gomez as her sponsor.

The working title of this picture was Uneasy Payments. It was then retitled Margie, to became part of Universal's series inspired by popular songs. According to a news item in Hollywood Reporter, Constance Moore was originally to have played the female lead in the picture, but was assigned instead to Argentine Nights.
