Synopsis

New York socialite Geraldine Stewart and her sister Carol find themselves bankrupt because of the financial manipulations of their late father's friend. As the rent on their Park Avenue penthouse is paid through the end of the year, the sisters decide to rent rooms to their maid, Annette, and chauffeur, Williams, to whom they owe back salaries. Both women are haughty and assume the pair will continue to serve them as before. Much to the sisters' surprise, however, Williams informs them that, while he looks for work and Annette cooks, they will pitch in with the other chores or go hungry. Geraldine tries to get a job in show business, but the only work she is offered involves stripping in a burlesque show, which she refuses to do. In the meantime, Williams, while driving the family Rolls-Royce, is mistaken for a taxi driver by a wealthy Nevada woman, "Pancake" Annie Jones, who is visiting New York with her son Phineas. Anxious to help Phineas break into New York society, Annie offers $1,000 for a socially advantageous invitation. When their money finally runs out, the sisters decide to accept Annie's offer. After Annette refuses to participate in the scheme, Geraldine acts as the maid, prompting Williams to kiss her as part of the act. While Annette then masquerades as a houseguest, she attracts Phineas' attention and soon leaves to marry him. Carol elopes with her rich fiancé, Garrett Wetherby, leaving Geraldine alone with Williams. After Williams is injured in a fight and cannot work, Geraldine takes the burlesque job. Before the performance, however, the theater is raided and Geraldine is arrested. From the police station, Geraldine telephones home for help, and Williams and Garrett, who has just returned from his honeymoon, bail her out. Once they are back home, Annie stops in to say goodbye and offers Williams a job out West. Although he believes that Geraldine will return to her haughty ways in Carol and Garrett's company, Williams accepts Annie's offer. Geraldine, who is in love with Williams, however, begs him to take her with him, and he agrees.
