Synopsis
New York advertising executive Vi Langdon is placed in charge of the account for Burton Fashions after she steals her clever young secretary Gloria Cole's idea for a sub-debutante beauty contest. One night Eddie Swenson, Gloria's boyfriend, announces that the building that houses the youth center where he and Gloria are volunteers has been sold to Everett H. Burton, the owner of Burton Fashions. The following day, Gloria delivers her proposal for the contest to Burton and takes the opportunity to try to dissuade him from buying the youth center site. Burton angrily sends her away, but later calls to praise her proposal and to ask her to handle the contest. To Vi's dismay, Gloria gets her own office and a raise. On the night of the youth center's Halloween party, Gloria lures Burton to the youth center, hoping to impress him with its good work, but her plan backfires when the gang mistakes him for one of the other volunteers and good-naturedly roughs him up. After Maggie Graham, another volunteer and aspiring actress, finds a replacement building, but reveals that it costs more than the center can afford, Gloria suggests that Maggie enter the beauty contest, posing as a debutante. Maggie wins, but before she can collect the prize money, Vi reveals the truth about her background. Burton uses this as an excuse to cancel his contract with the advertising company and Gloria is fired. Despite the favorable publicity that results from the contest, Burton refuses to renew his contract. At Christmas, Gloria visits Burton and informs him that Maggie will sign with another fashion house unless he pays her the prize money. At first Burton says no, but later, Eddie persuades him to offer Maggie the money and a job as a model and to let the youth center stay in its current location. Burton then tops his generosity by offering to hire Gloria, too.
