Synopsis
Ibrahim Dieng, an unemployed worker in Dakar, receives a money order from his nephew in Paris and goes to the post office to cash it, but he is told that he must have an identity card. He then goes to a police station where he is told that he cannot get an identity card without his birth certificate; at city hall he finds that he cannot get a birth certificate without a photograph. Dieng persuades another of his nephews, a water seller, to loan him the money until he can cash the money order, so the nephew gives him a check, but still without a card Dieng cannot cash it. After bribing the bank teller to cash the check, Dieng takes the balance of the money to a photographer's shop. When he returns the next day, he finds that the photographer has absconded with his money. He goes back to his nephew and asks him to cash the money order. The nephew takes the money order but returns empty-handed, explaining that his pocket has been picked. Dieng soon realizes that his nephew has cheated him, and he is now resigned to the loss of the money.
