Synopsis

After saving the outlaw known as the Shooting Kid from an angry lynch mob that is accusing him of horse theft, cowboy Tex Allen makes the Kid promise to go straight and sends him on his way. Tex rides into town with Sheriff Happy Martin, who tells him about the misfortunes that have plagued young Speed Dennison and his sister Laddie. Happy asks Tex to help Speed and Laddie run their ranch, and the cowboy agrees. Meanwhile, the Kid hires out as a gunman to the Dennisons' neighbor, Jeff Hall, who is plotting to force Speed off his land so that he can sell the valuable property to the railroad. Hall orders the Kid to kill Speed, but Tex comes to his rescue and saves the rancher's life. When the Kid learns that Tex is working on Speed's ranch, he tries to quit, but Hall threatens to blackmail him unless he follows orders. Speed will be ruined unless he can get his cattle to the railroad station in time, but Hall refuses to let him use the shortcut that runs across his land. Discovering that Hall is planning to string the short cut with barbed wire, Tex asks Happy to round up a posse. While Happy and his men drive the herd through the pass, Tex cuts the wire and the Kid covers him. In the ensuing shootout, the Kid is mortally wounded, but redeems himself by being on the right side of the law. With Hall eliminated, the herd is delivered on time, and Tex then reveals that he has been working as a trouble shooter for the railroad and that Hall was trying to steal Speed's ranch so that he could sell it to the railroad for a fat profit.
