Synopsis

Katia, daughter of an impoverished nobleman, boasts to her classmates of her acquaintance with Czar Alexander II; and when he unexpectedly visits her boarding school, he is so struck by her beauty and charm that he confirms her story. The czarina becomes aware of the affair and permits Katia to be brought to St. Petersburg. Alexander, aware of the need for political changes, confides his aspirations for social reform to Katia; and after the czarina dies and he and Katia marry, Alexander plans to present to Katia the proclamation of the new constitution. A few days before the coronation, however, revolutionists unaware of the impending reforms throw a bomb at the czar's carriage, and Alexander dies in Katia's arms.
