Synopsis

Captain Ramirez of the Federales offers a group of Mexican bandits full pardon and a large reward for the murder of the Harris brothers, leaders of a band of American outlaws who ravaged the town of Tecate, murdering many citizens and stealing the pure gold cross of St. Augustine. Led by Hidalgo, the Mexicans enter Gila Bend, a decaying town used as a front by the outlaws. Young Vicente, sent disguised as a peon to scout the area, is humiliated by the racist citizenry and returns with the message that the town is populated by gringos. The next day, Julie apologizes for the town to Vicente, and Fernandez goes to spend the night with Ruby, a sympathetic bar girl. Discovering the gold cross in her room, the Mexicans plant it in the deserted main street and wait in ambush. The Harris brothers return and are quickly gunned down, but Juarez, one of Hidalgo's band, is wounded. To save him and the townspeople from the outlaws' revenge, the Mexicans remain in the town. Lil, Jim Harris' girl friend, informs Wichita, the new leader of his gang, of the identity of the attackers. Refusing his advances, she is handed over to the 40 men around the campfire. The next morning, Fernandez and Ruby bring a cannon to town from a deserted fort. With the return of the Harris gang, a bloody battle is inaugurated by a blast from the cannon. Most of the Americans are killed, but all of the Mexicans die with them. Ruby, too, lies dead when the fight is over. The racist Granger feels that a decent burial is not worth the effort and decides to throw the bodies in a ditch.
