Synopsis
Many years after the end of World War II, airline pilot Dmitriy Losev finds a passport left behind by a passenger who may be his lost daughter. Losev's daughter disappeared as a newborn infant in 1941, when the hospital in which she was born was destroyed in a bombing raid and her mother was killed. Losev recalls his long and painful search for the girl. A number of orphaned babies had been evacuated by the town archivist and his daughter Aurika. Along the road, a German fighter plane attacked, killing Aurika, who shielded an infant with her body. The baby was sent to an orphanage and given the name Aurika after the young woman who saved her life. Later, she was adopted by an old couple who were primarily interested in receiving an additional state allowance provided for her care and who engaged in profiteering. Aurika left home and went to Siberia to help settle the virgin lands. Dmitriy was unable to track her further until he found the passport. He immediately sets out for the kolkhoz listed in the travel papers. As he reaches his destination, Aurika, who has become a nurse, is driving into town with her fiancé. She insists upon stopping to help a mother with a sick child, precipitating a quarrel with her fiancé. Taking the child to seek medical help, she hails a passing car in which Losev happens to be riding; and father and daughter are reunited.
