Synopsis
Thirty-nine-year-old Ginger Coffey, unable to hold a job in his native Ireland, emigrates to Canada with his wife, Vera, and his 14-year-old daughter, Paulie. He is no more successful there, and Vera, having saved enough money, wishes to return home. When Ginger spends the passage money, Vera takes Paulie and leaves. Paulie soon returns to live with Ginger, and he takes two jobs--newspaper proofreading at night and delivering laundry during the day--to support her. Believing that he will be promoted to a reporter's job at the newspaper, Ginger turns down a good offer at the laundry, but he is fired from the newspaper. Meanwhile, he has convinced Vera to return to him temporarily because he finds it difficult to control Paulie. Discouraged because he is not working, Ginger gets drunk and is arrested. The case is dismissed, and Vera is waiting for Ginger outside the courthouse.
