Synopsis
When Rome's brothels are officially closed, four prostitutes pool their savings and buy a dilapidated restaurant. Adua, the leader, is determined to stay out of the streets. Their landlord, Ercoli, is a former client who agrees to use his name in obtaining a food license on condition that they also conduct an "upstairs business." All goes well due to the girls' personalities, excellent food, and inexpensive prices until complications arise in their personal lives. Adua imagines herself to be in love with a fast-talking auto salesman named Piero, unaware he is merely using her to further his own ambitions. Marilina brings her 4-year-old son to live above the restaurant. Milly falls in love and makes plans to settle down. Only Lolita maintains her carefree and uncomplicated existence. But with Ercoli insisting they use the upstairs, everything goes wrong. Adua discovers Piero's unfaithfulness, Marilina must return her child to his foster home, and Milly is forced to admit her former profession to her boyfriend. When the food license is revoked, the girls get even with Ercoli by destroying the restaurant. But with it go their dreams of taking their places in legitimate society. Adua's worst fears are fulfilled when she is forced out into the streets.
