Synopsis

After he is jilted by his girl friend, Joe Miller, an egotistical, would-be radio star who works in the Burlap, Pennsylvania railroad station, comes upon aspiring singer Janet Melrose as she sleeps on a stopped train. Struck by Janet's beauty, Joe gently places the engagement ring he had bought for his former lover on her finger and slips out of the train without waking her. Later, Joe is fired from his job and leaves Burlap to seek his fortune in New York. When Joe finds Janet working at an automat, he tries to introduce himself to her, but in the process, causes her to be fired. Joe then connives his way into an audition at an advertising agency and so impresses the president of Burroughs Pancake Flour with his jokes that he is hired for a spot on the Burroughs Pancake Program. Joe's quick wit and energy soon bolster the sale of Burroughs pancakes and make Joe a promising radio headliner. Still alone, however, Joe returns to the automat and by chance meets up with Janet, who is struggling to make ends meet. After introducing himself to her as her "fiancé," Joe walks Janet home and offers to use his influence to get her singing work on his show. Suspicious of Joe's motives, Janet proudly rejects his offer and turns him away in anger. Months later, Joe, now a major radio personality, tracks down Janet and, once again, tries to help her. Determined to succeed on her own terms, however, Janet refuses Joe again and then chases him to the broadcast studio to return his "engagement" ring. To her surprise, she is recognized by Joe's program director, George Green, and is offered an audition. Although Janet becomes Joe's radio co-star, she resists his romantic overtures and grows despondent over his growing egotism. At a lavish penthouse party, a drunken Joe presents Janet with an ostentatious engagement ring but is firmly rejected. Depressed, Joe makes a drunken tirade against his employer during his next radio broadcast and is kicked off the air. Eventually Janet, who has learned that Joe had arranged with Green for her audition, locates the down-and-out performer and offers her aid. A humbled Joe proudly refuses her help and then follows her to the station to return a one-hundred dollar bill that she had left for him. While Janet is on the air, Joe bursts in and is surprised by the warm reception that the program audience awards him. After a tearful on-the-air apology, Joe is welcomed back by both Burroughs and Janet, who finally accepts his proposal.
