Synopsis
Sixteen years after the Germans deported her husband, Thérèse Langlois notices a tramp passing her small cafe in Paris. Certain that he is her husband, Thérèse follows him to his shack by the Seine and learns he has no memory of his life before the day he awakened in a German field. Inviting him back to her cafe, she tries to reawaken his memory by talking about her husband, but to no avail. When Thérèse notices a deep scar on the back of his head, she realizes he will never remember. Undaunted, she grasps at any slight indication that he may be her husband. As he leaves the cafe, Thérèse calls out her husband's name, Albert Langlois. The stranger stands petrified and then raises his arms like a condemned man in front of a firing squad. After waiting a moment or two, he runs into the path of a bus, picks himself up, and then continues his flight. Now certain that he is her husband, Thérèse decides she has used the wrong approach; she will find the man again and help him return to his former life.
