Synopsis

In Pecos City, government agent Smoky Moore interrupts a bank robbery, during which the bank guard is killed. Smoky is knocked out by the robbers, Dirk Larkin and Mort Saunders, and is framed for the robbery. As Sheriff Bill Hastings transports an unconscious Smoky to the doctor, Dirk and his gang attack the wagon in an attempt to kill Smoky. Smoky's partners, Tom Cameron, also known as "The Lone Rider," and Fuzzy Jones, hear the gunshots while they are riding nearby and rescue their friend. After two weeks, Smoky has recovered from his head wound, and he returns to Pecos City with Tom and Fuzzy, who have been summoned to help Bill, Smoky's adopted father, whom he has not seen in fifteen years. On their way into town, the trio foils a mine wagon robbery, but are unable to identify the outlaws. Smoky is not recognized in Pecos City, but he does recognize the mayor as Mort, the bank robber. Mort, who wants to get rid of honest Bill, and Mort's brother Jed decide to manipulate Tom into helping them and strike a deal with him: they will nominate him to be sheriff during the upcoming election and pay him handsomely. Tom pretends to be on the wrong side of the law and agrees to the deal, and Smoky is astonished that his friend has turned against him. Tom tries to convince Smoky that he is working under cover, and when Jed reveals the gang's plans to rob the next payroll wagon, Tom sets up a secret plan with Smoky and Fuzzy to prevent the robbery. The grateful wagon drivers arrest Jed and his cohort, Pete. Fearing Jed will confess, Dirk orders Jed's murder. Mort learns that Smoky is Bill's adopted son and, after publicly announcing Smoky's heritage, insists that Bill hang Smoky for the bank robbery. As Smoky is dragged toward the jail by a lynch mob. Tom convinces Pete that the lynch mob is coming after him. Pete then writes a full confession implicating the bank president, Mort and others. When the mob drags Smoky in, Bill arrests Mort, Dirk and their gang for the robberies and murders that have plagued the city. When Mort learns that Dirk is responsible for Jed's death, he shoots Dirk and then attempts to escape, but is captured by Tom. The trio of lawmen then go on to their next adventure.

Notes

The The Exhibitor reviewer noted that the "title is a misnomer since all action takes place in Pecos City-not Cheyenne." For additional inormation on the "Lone Rider" series, consult the Series Index and for The Lone Rider Rides On.
