Synopsis

Cowboy Tom Cameron, also known as The Lone Rider, stuns the sheriff with his exact resemblance to the notorious Keno Harris, who is about to be paroled for a bank robbery he committed five years before. The sheriff is reluctant to free Keno because the stolen money has never been recovered, whereas Tom has a more personal interest in the case: his good friend, a teller at the bank, was wrongly convicted of planning the robbery, and Tom is determined to prove his innocence. Tom convinces the sheriff to keep Keno in jail while he assumes the outlaw's identity and infiltrates his gang. At the gang's meeting place, the Seven Mile House saloon, Tom encounters gang leader Blackie Dawson and singer Linda, Keno's girl friend, who are puzzled by what they see as memory gaps and personality changes in their old friend. Tom criticizes the gang's operations, but Blackie refuses to introduce him to the mysterious "big boss," who controls things behind the scenes. Later, Tom meets with his old pal Fuzzy and tells him about the gang's plan to rob a payroll office, instructing Fuzzy to notify the sheriff. Tom refuses to take part in the robbery, but sneaks out of his room in time to see the sheriff's posse ambush the gang. From then on, every robbery the gang plans is foiled by the posse, and their numbers dwindle as gang members are shot or arrested. Moving on to the next step of his plan, Tom tells Fuzzy to have Keno released and to trail him to the hidden money while the posse trails Fuzzy. That night, after yet another heist gone awry, a suspicious Linda observes Tom sneaking into his room, and tells him she knows he is an impostor. Tom convinces her to meet with Keno and see if he has kept his promise to reform before exposing his ruse to the gang. When Keno is released the next day, Linda intercepts him on the road and urges him to forget the stolen money and go away with her, but he refuses. Back at the saloon, Blackie finally admits that he is actually the big boss, and that he framed Tom's friend, the bank teller. When a crestfallen Linda returns to tell Tom he was right about Keno, Blackie orders gang member Charlie Davis to follow Tom. Meanwhile, Fuzzy watches as Keno digs up the buried loot, then sends a smoke signal to the posse. Keno tricks Fuzzy into revealing the plan, however, and ambushes Tom, forcing him to switch clothes. When Charlie reports the double-cross, Blackie gives orders to shoot Tom on sight, but it is Keno, now dressed like Tom, who is slain. With the posse in pursuit, Tom and Fuzzy find Keno's body and retrieve Tom's clothes, then return to the saloon to fight it out with Blackie and his men. The gang is defeated, and Linda takes over the saloon. After bidding her a fond goodbye, Tom and Fuzzy head for the open trail.
