Synopsis
Lallo, a Neapolitan youth, comes to Milan upon the death of his father, a penniless gigolo, and decides to place himself at the disposal of rich women. Since his father's wealthy longtime mistress, Giuditta, is too deep in mourning to be of help, Lallo moves in with his Aunt Lidia and Uncle Carlo and quickly latches onto Gilberta, a wealthy patroness who gives him an automobile. His Aunt Lidia's possessiveness becomes bothersome, and Lallo is relieved when she is taken abroad by her husband. Lallo moves on to the ski resort of Cortina d'Ampezzo and charms a bored socialite, Ida, into paying his bills. Lallo's presence also arouses the sexual interest of Flavia, a steel heiress, and Baron von Tummler, an old homosexual, and the two compete at an auction for a pair of antique cufflinks that interests Lallo. Though the baron wins the cufflinks, Lallo chooses Flavia, but their brief affair ends after he overhears her discussing him in uncomplimentary terms with Ida. En route back to Milan Lallo unexpectedly meets his mother at a railroad station as she is on her way to remarry in Vienna. Once back at Giuditta's home, Lallo falls in love with his hostess' daughter Sveva. She breaks off her engagement and Lallo announces that he plans to marry her, but Giuditta, operating on the principle that "money marries money," dashes his hopes by telling him that Sveva is his half sister. Disillusioned, Lallo recalls the opinion of his father's friend Tassi that young men fare better if they attach themselves to homosexuals, and he accepts the lavish support of Baron von Tummler.
