Synopsis
Jacques Valin works as a real estate agent and lives with Viviane, an advertising model. One day he discovers the pleasure of solitary meditation, during which he withdraws from the world around him. He begins experimenting with this technique in a variety of situations, and Viviane becomes concerned over his lack of attention. To allay her fears, Jacques proposes marriage, but he disappears from the wedding reception given by his employers and for that reason is fired. Delighted to have more free time, he continues his withdrawal, driving Viviane to attempt suicide. She recovers but leaves him when she senses his lack of real concern. Her doctor becomes interested in Jacques, and when he sees that neither Jacques' mother nor a close friend can help him, he has Jacques committed to an asylum.
