Synopsis

When the body of Florence, one of the beauticians at Celeste's beauty parlor, pops out of the laundry shoot, Mary Baker, the last person to see Florence alive, falls under suspicion. Mary's sweetheart, Frankie Kelly, a page boy at the salon, determines to prove her innocence, and with the help of his assistant, Jefferson, begins to investigate. After discovering that Florence was murdered just prior to meeting with detective Dan Haggerty to give him information about a blackmail ring, the pair are confronted with another murder when the body of Florence's fiancé is found in the dumbwaiter. Their troubles mount when Frankie and Jefferson call for Mary at the apartment of wealthy Mrs. Inez Morton, whose hair Mary has been styling, only to find that the dowager has been shot. As they spirit Mary out of the building before the police arrive, the pair find a phonograph record of a telephone call that Mrs. Morton made to a blackmailer at the beauty parlor. Remembering that he has seen microphones at the salon, Frankie discovers that Celeste installed dictataphone devices for the purposes of recording clients' conversations and using the recordings for blackmail. Frankie's investigation heats things up for Celeste, who plans to skip town, but first she and her lawyer, Alvin Craig, decide to silence Frankie and Jefferson, and so imprison them in a secluded office at the beauty salon. Celeste is just about to make her getaway when Frankie pulls out a fuse, throwing the building into darkness. This delays Celeste and Craig long enough to allow the police to arrive and arrest the gang.
