Synopsis
Social climber Mrs. Westerly is so anxious to ascend into the ranks of the social register that she has stretched the family's finances to the point that her son Jimmy is forced to take a job in a brokerage house. Although Jimmy enjoys working, his mother is horrified at the idea and so decides to invite the Conklins, a rich Western family, to visit, hoping that Priscilla, the family's daughter, will fall in love and marry Jimmy. Mrs. Westerly invites all of New York society to attend a reception in honor of the Conklins, but when she receives nothing but polite rejections, she decides to hire a group of unemployed actors to pose as titled foreigners, society queens and business tycoons. Among those hired to attend the reception is Boris Rascalnikoff, a Russian who pretends to be a prince. Accompanying him is his "sister" Sonia, who in real life is Pam Crawford, a blues singer. When Jimmy and Pam fall in love at the reception, Mrs. Westerly keeps separating them and propelling Jimmy into the company of Priscilla. Continuing her deception, Mrs. Westerly gives a series of parties for the Conklins, to which she invites all the imposters who attended the first party. One night at a masquerade ball, Mrs. Westerly informs Mrs. Conklin that she plans to announce Jimmy and Priscilla's engagement. Aware that her daughter loves Buck, the head wrangler on their ranch, Mrs. Conklin wires Buck to fly to New York as soon as possible. Upon Buck's arrival, Mrs. Conklin curtails Mrs. Westerly's plans by announcing Priscilla's engagement to the cowboy. Relieved, Jimmy searches for his Russian princess, and overhears Pam telling a cousin of the family that she is a phony. Furious, Jimmy tells her off, and Pam, heartbroken, leaves the party. Soon after, Jimmy finds out about his mother's deception and realizes that Pam was not at fault. With the help of Boris, Jimmy traces Pam to a nightclub and the lovers happily reconcile.
